I have a phone that has an error reading "no ethernet". I have replaced cables, and the phone and that station still has the error. The error doesn't show itself right away. The phone is able to hold an extension for a day or so.

The POE switch port it is plugged into has been receiving errors and goes to a status of "err disabled". I can reset the port, and it will be fine for a day or so.

I have performed a (mute) reset on the phone to no avail. It is only one phone/station.

Any idea what would be causing this?
Thanks!

Make sure that the port on the phone and the port on the switch is set to AUTO. If the port still disables itself due to errors, then you will have to start troubleshooting the cable, switchport, phone, etc.

Well, 'No Ethernet' is exactly what it says. You've swapped the phone and cables, so you can rule those out. Next, I would replace the wall jack, or at least re-punch it to make sure the connections are good. If that doesn't help, you may have a bad cable run or the run is near something that is interfering with transmission.

If you can, plug the phone directly into the switch over the weekend and see if it is still connected on Monday. That should help you rule out things too.

how would I know if the port is set to auto? I do a show int f#/#/#, but I don't see anything in the uotput that says auto enabled.

Do a "show run int fa#/#/#" and you'll get an output that looks like this:

interface GigabitEthernet1/0/6
switchport access vlan 2
switchport mode access
switchport voice vlan 20
srr-queue bandwidth share 10 10 60 20
srr-queue bandwidth shape 10 0 0 0
queue-set 2
mls qos trust cos
no snmp trap link-status
auto qos voip trust
no mdix auto
spanning-tree portfast
end

If the speed and duplex are not specifically stated, then the interface is set to auto. What model switch are you using?

duplex is full and speed is 100.
the model is a Catalyst 3750 series POE 24

I have the phone straight wired to the port, bypassing the patch panel. so far it hasn't errored out.

...and the speed and duplex on the phone? On the phone, press "MUTE int#" PHY1 should match your LAN switch. PHY2 should match your dekstop/laptop/"other IP enabled device".

I checked the phone and both PHY1 and PHY2 are set to auto. Also the phone hasn't errored out since it has been straight wired into the port.

There is your likely issue. With the switch port being set to 100/Full and the phone being set to AUTO, the phone (9 times out of 10) will negotiate at 100/Half and you will have issues. When you do a "sh int fa#/#/#" are there any inpout errors or CRC's?

Input Side:
8440258 packets input, 1969609723 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 141594 broadcasts (0 multicast)
0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
0 watchdog, 127742 multicast, 0 pause input
0 input packets with dribble condition detected

Output Side:
37921590 packets output, 2347575268 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 2 interface resets
0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

There are 11 input errors, and no CRC. There are no output errors.

Now it's time to decide whether or not you are going to go AUTO or 100/Full end to end.

We went back and forth with the all hard-coded model versus the all-auto model and decided to go with the all-auto model after seeing the bright light of gigabit ethernet on the horizon(which requires auto).

Once you straighten out the duplexing issue, you should be fine.

This is the output from a show run command
interface FastEthernet3/0/4
switchport access vlan 127
switchport voice vlan 121
duplex full
speed 100
mls qos trust dscp
no mdix auto
spanning-tree portfast
end

this is the output from a show interface command

Full-duplex, 100Mb/s, media type is 10/100BaseTX
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 00:00:00, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 2000 bits/sec, 4 packets/sec
30528840 packets input, 2269882396 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 21206 broadcasts (0 multicast)
0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
11 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
0 watchdog, 1903 multicast, 0 pause input
0 input packets with dribble condition detected

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 7 interface resets
0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

Are you familiar with changing the speed and duplex settings?

If not, here are the commands:

from the enable prompt

hostname#config t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
hostname(config)#int fa 3/0/4
hostname(config-if)#duplex auto
hostname(config-if)#speed auto
hostname(config-if)#exit
hostname(config)#exit
hostname#wr
Building configuration...
[OK]
hostname#

when you do another "sh run int interface fa 3/0/4" you should see:

FastEthernet3/0/4
switchport access vlan 127
switchport voice vlan 121
mls qos trust dscp
no mdix auto
spanning-tree portfast
end

Then do a "clear counters" and keep an eye on the interface.

Thanks for your help!
