I have a new Avaya 3510GT-PWR+ switch that doesn't allow me to access via cli. I have HyperTerminal set up according to the instructions but when I press ctrl y nothing happens. Since that wasn't working I accessed it through the web interface. I ran the command to load the pre configured IP Office setup which worked. I then ran the command to reset to default which also worked. I then reconnected using the web interface and attempted to manually configure the switch. I cancelled the process before making any changes and now I can't get in via the web interface either. Is there a way to do a "hard" reset to default? Also when I reboot and am connected via the console port I can see the boot sequence and it finishes with the Avaya page but ctrl y does nothing. I also tried cntrl c as it was booting but still no response. This is the first experience I have had with this switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you see the Avaya banner, that's when you hit ctl-Y. If that doesn't work, then I don't know.

If you don't see anything in hyperterminal during bot up then check the cable and/or PC com port speed etc.

I do see the boot up sequence and it gets to the Avaya banner. HyperTerminal is set up - 9600,8,1,none,none. Emulation is VT100.

I agree, never used it. I always used ProComm, Kermit95 or Putty for CLI/Telnet/FTP tasks.
Now I use only Putty as it is solid, versatile and free ( important because I am Dutch! )

Tried Putty got the Avaya banner - ctrl y still does nothing.

Can you connect to any other device using the com port of your laptop? Could be that the com port is broken?

Replace cable?

Try to connect to a IP Office, 38400, 8, N, 1

Type AT (captitals) and see if you receive OK in order to test the com port.

Are you using a USB to serial adapter or a physical COM port? I've seen some of the cheap USB/serial adapters that don't send control codes. I have a Belkin FSU409 USB to serial that works well. Never had an issue with a physical com port.

Yes, I am using a usb to serial adapter and yes I can connect to an IP Office unit. I am using a RJ45 to DB9 adapter with a rollover cat 5 cable.

It could be the cable then. Do you have a Cisco console cable handy? Those work with the Avaya 3500 series switches.

Issues like this make me wonder why Avaya doesn't include a console cable with their switches.

Cut the prize as much as possile, if they could the would send it unboxed....
