Avaya 302c console principal day/night not working...

I have never set up a principal and day/night console. There are 2 operators. One works 8 to 5 the other 9 to 6:30. One is principal and can put the calls into night, but I have the other set to day/night and cannot put it into night. What am I missing? Is there a specific process they need to do (i.e put themselves into pos busy first) is there a cor/cos or something in sys param console?? Day/Nght op can put themself into pos busy. But when pressing night just flashes for a few sec then nothing. I status and it's only in pos busy.
 
We have a configuration with 4 consoles.

2 of which are set-up in the configuration you describe.
We are lucky they are only 6 feet from each other.

Only the principle can have the night button.

To assist the operator in being able to press the night button and clear the console q, we front-ended the main number in a vdn and a tod schedule that kicks in at 5pm for 10 minutes and sends calls to the answering service at 5pm, the vdn follows the night button program and calls continue to goto the service.
