We are setting up a new BCM50 Rls 6 with Avaya 1220 IP sets. The BCM is set up for DHCP and when the new sets are plugged in the BCM shows IP addresses for the sets but they never come up; we get an initail manual config menu then the display goes blank. We're assuming it's a firmware issue but can't seem to find the right firmware on the Avaya site to load using a TFTP server. Any ideas?
Thanks

I've had this problem with the 1140E's and i2004's. The phones may be set for Static IP, so once the phone makes the former "Nortel Chime" and shows the Avaya logo, press the 4 softkeys from left to right in sequence and a manual config. menu should come up and find the settings for DHCP under network configuration and turn it on.

After Choosing DHCP reboot the phone and the phone should restart and point towards your BCM. You know you've done this properly when the phone asks you to Register a New DN.

Once your BCM recognizes the phone, you can Press the Force Firmware download under the IP Telephony, Sets tab in Element Manager to load the latest firmware from your BCM.

If you want downloads of the Unistim firmware from Avaya and you do not have an Avaya "Sold To" number, you are out of luck, they are no longer allowing individuals to load the firmware without registering and purchasing something from Avaya, unlike Nortel's site, where you could load firmware freely.

Also, if your phone is showing DHCP, sometimes just unchecking the box for DHCP and then turning it back on and then rebooting solves the problem.

Please let me know your results and I will keep trying to help you.

Sounds like the phones are registering, just not working correctly, so DHCP shouldn't be an issue. Have you tried the "Force Firmware Download" procedure referred to earlier?

Thanks for the responses. What is happening is when the phone is plugged in the display shows "loading BootC"; that messages goes out and then the display shows:
120X IP Telephones
Manual Configuration
NORTEL

At that point, if you press the four soft keys from left to right you can enter programming. If you do nothing, that message disappears and the phone display next shows "start DHCP." That message goes away after a few seconds and then then the display stays blank. If you look at the lease information in the DHCP of the BCM you can see the MAC address of the phone with the DHCP addressed set assigned. The phone does not show ip in the IP sets under resources so you can't force a dwonload from there.

I will try turning off DHCP on a set and see what happens.

There is a lot of info missing from your post, such as what is being used as the DHCP server? Is the IP set being connected to a working network or directly to the BCM?

It sounds like the set is working as it should. My first thoughts, based on the supplied info, is that it is set for full DHCP and that that it has a really high retry count for both the S1 and S2 servers. Eventually that set should display "server unreachable".

Looks like you can get into programming so why don't you change DHCP to partial and manually set your S1 server to the address of the BCM, make sure your port is 7000 and keep your retry count down to about 10 or lower (same settings should apply to S2 except the retry set to 2 or something).

If you must leave DHCP turned on in the BCM, make sure it's set for "IP phones only". It's been my experience though that even leaving it set that way it can cause cause connectivity issues with the sets because of the customer's DHCP server responding first and therefore having the wrong address for the S1 and S2 servers. So, if the network already has a DHCP server, leave it off in the BCM, configure the set for partial and manually programm the S1 and S2 server parameters.

If you've never programmed those 1100 series sets, you're in for a treat. Get ready to pull some hair out as they are a pain in the a@#! until you get the hang of them.

So, we mangaged to get these sets working by connecting them to a BCM50 rls3 system we have in our lab. The phones came up to where the display prompted for a password. At that point we connected the phones to the BMC rls 6 and the phones booted up; the display prompted us for the password and dn and once those were entered the phones came up working.

Once all the phones came up we were able to force a firmware download to each set.

The BCM rls 6 is set up in our shop being programmed for installation next week. The BCM and the phones are connected to a network switch that is independent; it in not connected to any other switches, routers or servers.

There is now a patch out to fix the incorrect firmware installed on the 1200 series phones for bcm50 rel6 and bcm450 rel6..
Its a upts 9-1.

seems as if avaya have the wrong firmware on the sets.
you can use a tftp software and download the firmware to the phones directly or install the latest patch which has been released

Thanks for the help. I'll pass these on to our techs.
