Hi!
Perhaps you could help me. We have several servers (Win NT4) in a WAN with different speed links.
In the main Data Center we have Netview to monitor them, but we use a ping. If the ping fails, Netview pings to the router, and if it fails, we assume that is a WAN LINK problem.
But, how could i do to measure the availability of the servers ?
Should i SNMP and forward the traps to Netview ? What happen if the LINK is DOWN and the servers goes down ? The trap will die ?
Do you know which other Tivoli tool could i use to measure availability ?
This servers are 7x24.
Which tool could i use to make reports and understand the data that Netview (TEC perhaps?) offers ?

Thanks for your help.

For reporting tools in Tivoli you are probably looking at the Tivoli Decision Support product.
That can take data from TEC, so it would be sensible to have Netview send to TEC, then TDS take data from TEC.

Hope that helps,
Simon

The best tool for this job is TEC. You can get or create a simple heartbeat monitor to run periodically to make sure the servers are up, or use the "Best Practices" NT monitors recommended by Tivoli. Any failures then will go directly to the TEC. (BTW, there are network interface monitors included in the best practices document)

I don't know what kind of routers or switches you are using, but if you import the MIBs from the router(s) and/or switches into netview, you sould be able to monitor network links and forward any failures to the TEC as well, then set up some sort of notification scheme to send e-mail or page, etc., for all of this.

I just saw SimonERM's post. I agree that TDS would bbe the best reporting tool, since it integrates so easily. Plus it's got lots of geek buttons (read: features) that managers love so much for reporting.
