When typing a Month in Word 97 a pop up suggests the completion of the word (autocomplete / autotext function)
ie: typing Janu will result in a pop up suggesting January.
After accepting the suggestion and hitting space it displays a pop up suggesting 01 (the year).
ie January 01

How can I change this to suggest January 2001 or even the full date ???

Help ....................

I tried this is Microsoft 2000, so I hope it is close to the same instructions.

Insert
Autotext
Autotext
Put your date the way you want it in the blank space ie;January 2001
Press ADD

The next time you type Jan----it will automatically come up

Hope this works for you! ggebhart@clover.net

More than likely, you can do this globally by going to Start-Settings-Control panel-Regional settings and try the different formats for long date.

Sorry ... close but no cigar.
What you suggested will work but does not answer the question of how do you change the format of the date that the Autoinsert / autocomplete suggests.

Thanks .

The way to type something differently is to not press enter when the autosuggest/autocomplete dialog pops up but just keep typing it the way you want to after you press the spacebar and the suggest dialog goes away right after you type the 2 in the 2001. Any of the autocomplete entries can be overridden this way or you can turn autotext/autocomplete off altogether.

You aren't changing the autocomplete this way, you are just overriding it this time. The next new document it will come up with the 01 suggestion again and you can override it again. The only way to change/add a suggestion of your own is to follow the instructions above.

I hope this answers your question.

Thankyou for your replies.
Dreamboat - no .. global settings doesnt do it :(
Igebhart - the suggestions you have offered are all great (as workarounds) but the question of the week still presents itself to stump one and all ...............
How can you change the date format on the Auto insert / Auto complete.

I have tried this in Word 97. If you go to Insert, Date and select the format you want for autocomplete, then press Default, it should change the format for autocomplete entries to the format you desire.

Try typing the full month (i.e. January), hit the space bar. It should automatically show you the full date. Then hit the tab to complete it.

Sabre: When I type Janu and accept January, and then hit the spacebar, I get the entire date (today it says January 8, 2001). Are you saying that is NOT what you get? Why don't you email me a screen shot of the date tab in your regional settings.

Mine is:

Calendar type: Gregorian (tho this is grayed out)
Two-digit year: Set to between 1930 and 2029
Long date reads: dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy

Again .. thank you all for taking the time to help :)

jorzech - No, changing the default date format in word does not change the autocomplete date format .... well at least not for me.

Garridon - No, typing the full word January and then hitting space still gives me the autocomplete of 01 as the year. :(

Dreamboat - I've sent you the screen shots ....

Sorry Sabre - works for me....oh the mysteries of Word!

Thankyou all for your help .... especially Dreamboat.
It was the Global date setting ! (okay some of you told me but honestly ... it wasn't working)

The trick was, when I changed it to mmmm dd, yyyy it had no effect. But when I changed it to MMMM dd, yyyy it changed the autocomplete date format.!!

Isn't Word wonderfull !?
