Is there a way of easily setting the proxy server settings in Internet Explorer 5.5 for certain users in our NT4 domain?

I only want to customise certain users' machines but as a last resort, all machines could have this information set.

We are running a combination of NT4 Workstation and Windows 2000 Pro.

At the moment I am manually inputting the information which is a complete pain!

Best Regards,

That depends.
How are the clients getting an IP address?
If they get it from a DHCP server, you can add that information there.
If they have manually fixed addresses, you will need to handle every PC.

Well, on the DHCP server you can (have to) set all the correct settings regarding default gateway etc. Your clients should pick that up.
IE proxy settings should be on automatic ...

If not, there is another way but it involves the registry.
Take 1 NT 4 and 1 Win2000 (both properly configured) and go through the registry (regedit) and locate the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings.

Export that key to a reg file and open that on all PC's to be modified.
The reg file is text only, so you can delete any line that are not in need to be modified.
It should contain only something like:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
"ProxyServer"="proxy.yourproxy.be:8080"

We have clients that access the internet from different subnets so we have to manually enter the proxy settings.

Looks like the registry hack seems the best way to implement the change. Do users need administrator privileges to run a registry 'change' file? If so, it would be easier to just tell the users how to change the info. over the phone.

Is there any way to run the change in a log on script?

Regards,

If they have enough rights, you can add it to the loginscripts. If not, then you either have to do it yourslef, or tell them what to do.
I would send them an email explaining it, it really not that hard, add a snapshot maybe. A few will not get it but that can then be handled over the phone. Most of them will get it done themselves.
