Hi All,

I've installed a program on a user's machine and it works perfectly when logged in as an admin, but not under the user's name which is how it needs to run.

With the user's login it will run if you use the 'run program as another user' option and input the admin name & password, which is good, BUT it requires manual input every time, and obviously we can't give out that password!

As this guy is a 'fiddler' when it comes to PCs we don't really want to add him to an Admin or Power User group on his machine, we just need high level access to this one program.

So, is it possible to tweak something whereby when the exe is hit it says 'okay, I shall run this as admin' and launch without any manual input? Or will I need to create an exclusive admin level group for that one program and shove the user in it?

Any ideas, please? Thank you.

Hi there,

I know this is not a direct answer to your question but we encounter this problem quite often. If you can discover what the program's dependencies are, changing the permissions on them is a much better way of doing things.

The Win2k dependency walker is a good tool but I usually use REGMON and FILEMON to see where problems are being encountered. Both are freely available tools on the web.

Set the permissios for the program to everyone. Then they should be able to use the program.

That doesn't necessarily always work, as that does not affect registry settings, or dlls required in the windows directory.

you need to try to find out what it is trying to change that needs admin rights. filemon and regmon will do great for that.
then change the rights for the key and or directorys so that the program can make the changes it need to logged in with the restricted account.

good luck

Give the user admin rights, install the program then take away his rights and it should work.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. We did a test with the Palmersoft program, and that worked okay. Unfortunately it didn't work on the required user's machine - they'd stuffed it up too badly! But after a rebuild it worked okay on there, so thanks again. [thumbsup]
