Is it possible to turn the computer on and off at certain times automatically?

Something like a scheduled task?

If the computer is switched off (but with power) and a scheduled task is planned, will the computer boot in order to executet the task?

Best regards

In the server world there are back up power supplies that have a managed console that we can log in to and essentially flip a virtual switch to power cycle a machine. Great if you have offsite servers. However these are fairly expensive (around $2500 for a good size battery, and switch) but there are other options out there.

None are very easy to do really, basically if you have a newer PC you'd have to set the "Wake On Lan" option in your BIOS, your NIC would have to support Wake On Lan as well (you'd have to check with manufacture) and you could do it that way. There are other options like this company that provides the hardware so all you have to do is make a phone call to your computer to turn itself on and I am pretty sure X10 also has similar hardware. The X10 web page sucks but they do have some cool products.

I did a Google search for "configure wake on lan" and there are a ton of websites that can tell you how to get it working. I've never had a need for it so I really couldn't tell ya how. Good luck!

Cheers
Rob
