automatically increase build number

hey,
I am writing an operating system in C, and I am wondering how I can write an include file, or a .c file for my kernel that will automatically increase the build number on each compile. My compiler is gcc, and im running rh linux 7.2. any suggestions, would be appreaciated.

instead of writing a c code for this.. u may want to write a shell script in Makefile which does just that ..
