Once in a while I get to completely wipe out a computer and install windows xp home/pro. After doing that I get to do a great deal many of updates and restarts. Is there a way to make windows immediately check for updates and install them without using the existing automatic windows update? It seems to only check based on the schedule I choose but I need it to check for updates and install them immediately on restart and then repeat till there are no more updates.

You can type WUAUCLT.EXE /DETECTNOW at the RUN box and it should force it to check and start downloading updates now. There are other ways to reset the timing via registry "timer" setting.

What I would do however is use this tool and store XP updates on an external hard drive or memory stick - much faster (no downloading). Fantastic tool vs. sitting there and waiting. Plus it can automatically reboot when required and then pick up where it left off and keep rebooting until done. If there is a password for the user, it doesn't matter because it will CREATE a temporary user and log in and keep going, then remove the user when done.

Truly run it and walk away. Still takes some time for the updates to get installed, but less than to download + install. Just do updates on the "update store" maybe once per month and you'll have 99% of the updates needed.

This is very good. I downloaded it but haven't had a chance to actually put it into action yet.

I don't usually share this much, but here's something I ended up writing for the task of downloading offline updates for Windows off of Windows Update. YMMV on it, especially for other operating systems, but it's been working for me well enough on Windows XP.

Download link here.
