Hey all,

To configure windows update, does xp require SP2?

I'm trying to configure a PC here to point to a wsus server. I'm unable to find "Windows Update" in the local group policy.

I checked the control panel and I don't see the Automatic Updates logo so I cannot configure it. I have 2 pc's here with the same issue and they're both on SP1 so i'm not sure if this is the issue or now.

Any ideas?

Nope. Automatic Update has been around since Windows 2000 SP3.

Perhaps the PC's in question are abiding by the domain's group policy which may have automatic updates disabled or pointing to a distribution server on the network.

Thanks for the response.

The 2 machines are not on a domain though.

Well, I suppose you could always try to update one to SP2 and see if it helps.

Also make sure the service is not disabled and started (use services.msc).

Check the registry keys listed below as well:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesWindowsUpdate\DisableWindowsUpdateAccess]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
"AUOptions"=dword:00000000

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesWindowsUpdate]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoDevMgrUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"NoUpdateCheck"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesWindowsUpdate]
"DisableWindowsUpdateAccess"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

You can copy that text into notepad and save it as a .REG file, then import it into the registry by double-clicking it. Or if you prefer, check each one manually. Just make sure you backup the registry before making any changes.
