We recently moved all our data to a new server. Since then, several users have experienced extreme slowness problems when opening Word documents. We were unable to find old server associations in the Word document within Word itself. However, when opening the document in a hex editor program the old server name clearly showed up. After editing the document, ie change the server name, the slowness problems were resolved. Is there any way to automate this process? Editing every single document manually in this way would take us several months. Any help/suggestions very much appreciated!

If you are using Office 97/Word 97, there is a known issue with the UNC being used instead of mapped drive. There is a MSKB article about correcting it with a registry patch.

Sorry I don't remember the article number. But if you do a search on UNC for Word in the KB, I'll think you'll find it.

You need to disable link file tracking:

Add this value under

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Value Name: LinkResolveIgnoreLinkInfo
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1 (enable)
