Hello all,

I am having trouble flushing and renewing an IP address. I flush successfully, but renew gives me the same IP address that I don't want. It should search for an IP automatically.

Thanks in advance

Well, it will do that if it is the next in line---say there are 100 devices on your LAN, and the dhcp pool is 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.254
Let's say that your previous IP address was 192.168.1.7, and 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.6, plus 192.168.1.8 through 192.168.1.93 are all taken up. That leaves 192.168.1.94 through 192.168.1.254, but it also leaves 192.168.1.7, as soon as you release your IP address. If you renew before any other device renews its lease, well it will pick 192.168.1.7 for the next lease---that one seems to be yours, since you do the ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew right after. Make sense?

Also, depending on what is issuing the addresses - I know NT4.0 did this - the server will still hold the address as reserved for so long.

Therefore, even though you have released the address from the client, when you come to get an address, the server says "This mac address is reserved for this IP address" and re-issues the same address.

I know in NT4.0 the reason given for this was due to intermittant network issues which caused the machines to loose ip addresses.

Thank you for the replies.

I come to find out The cause of this was because the DHCP client and Remote Procedure Call were both disabled. I reset both to start automatic. This worked and to this day
I am able to flush, renew and reginsterdns successfully.

Again thank you for chiming in.

Have a great day

GO GIANTS!!!!!
