We are considering installing the Optivity NMS software and I was wondering if it can do schedule auto-backups. We have a passport 8600, approx 30 BPS 2Ks and some 450s. Also does Optivity recognize non-Nortel equipment? Although we are primarily Nortel, we do have two Cisco 7200s and a PIX.

We actually have a liscense for it, but havn't been using it. How easy is the software to use? What kind of detail does it give you (port stats, traffic utilization etc)?

Auto backups of what ??????????
Cisco is listed in the generic data dase, but you might have to install the mibs for 7200 & Pix.

BPS 2k, 450s and the 8600 itself are my main concern. Currently I have to back everything up manually. I would like to automate this process.

You want to back up the configurations ?

Yes, their configurations. We have several vlans configured on these switches and it would be much easier to apply a backup config rather than starting from scratch and looking up what port belonged to what vlan etc.

Can't do that with Optivity. Might try a TFTP server and a backup script.
Optivity is pretty granualar, but some things are more difficult than others. Intutitive it ain't.
I monitor 70 ARN's ,couple of 8600's,350,450,470 switches,contivity 2600.
Just starting to explore wireless Nortel equipment.
You might want to get a Nortel sales support engineer to give you a high level overview before you start getting
into the Optivity configuration.
There used to be a management product called NCS(Network Configuration System) it would do what you wanted. Sorry,no longer supported;but it's still available for download on Nortel's web site.

What you require for this function is OSM , Optivity Switch Manager. This provides a basic network topology as well as inventory and backup of configurations (in the latest version) v4.x. Its about $800 i think

Thanks. Looks like I will have to research doing the backups using scripts then. My chances of getting any money are slim to none.
