Hello...

I am having this really strange problem at a client. When a user is not logged into the domain and launches Outlook, a box comes up asking for a user name and password... as it should. But when the correct username/password is entered, Outlook continues to ask for the user/pass as if the credentials entered were incorrect.

I can log in as a user into the domain and Outlook works fine. If I log out of the domain and on the same computer log into the local workstation and configure Outlook to point to the exchange server this problem occurs.

I need to have some users not log into the domain for RAS purpuses.

Exchange is 5.5 on NT4. workstation is Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000. I updated Office with all the updates.
Any suggestions? Anybody see this before?

I would really appreciate some input!
Thanks

Yes this is perfectly normal, if you cannot be authenticated it won't let you in; would you want it any other way?

For an alternative have you considered Outlook Web Access? There are some good FAQs on this site:

But the username and password I present is correct. Outlook is set up to the correct user and I enter the right credentials. It should let me in.

yes... but the username and password is for authentication with your domain controller, if you cannot connect to that you won't have permission to access the exchange server.

Hello,

Are you using this format?

Domain_name\username
Password

The box that comes up has three fields, Username, Domain and Password, so I can't sue the format domain\username. If you try to enter the domain\user in the username field and leave the domain field blank, the OK button is greyed out.

The strange thing is that if you go into the control panel, mail, and edit the exchange service, you need to provide the exchange server and username. I type in the name of the exchange server and the alias for the user. I click the button to check it and it asks for the username and password (since I am not on the domain). I enter the usernam, domain and password as requested... and it DOES resolve the name of the user and underline it... it works there... but then next I try to run Outlook and the familiar box comes up asking for the username, domain and passowrd again. But this time, when I enter it it... it says it is not correct.

Strange eh? I am on the same LAN... I can ping the domain controler, I can ping the exchange server.

I don't get it.
