Using basic authentication, the user is prompted for a username and password. The look of this prompt differs across browsers, but it always contains the same information, e.g. on Firefox you get

Enter username and password for area at hostname

Is there any way to configure apache not to give this "area" and "hostname" information to the browser? i.e. all we want to see is something like "Enter username and password"

Greg.

I don't know of a way to get rid of that, but there might be another solution.

If you want to customize the look of your authentication process, you may want to use a server-side scripting language to validate the user instead of using HTTP authentication.
