I've got an Exchange 2007 server and I'm trying to enable SMTP relay for POP clients that authenticate from outside my private network. I've searched and searched and everything I find has not worked. Nothing I find specifically talks about allowing relay from authenticated clients like Outlook. In exchange 2000, this was accomplished by selecting the "Allow users who successfully authenticate to relay..."

Has anyone had success in setting up allowing users who authenticate to relay?

SMTP relay? What is wrong with Outlook Anywhere? It negates opening POP to the world, cuts out a service, simplifies your network and works excellently.

Shame on me for not checking out the new functionality. I upgraded from Exchange 2000 and was first trying to implement what I had before. We are small... less than 10 users.

Thanks for the heads up, it sounds like Outlook Anywhere is exactly what I need. Screw POP3, now my remote users will be able to access the full features of Exchange and public folders as well.

I'll get started on enabling that right away.

Excellent news - OA is a fantastic piece of kit. It takes a bit to get the server sorted correctly but once done it works as if they were on the LAN only they enter username / password on starting Outlook not logging onto desktop.

The certificate may cause problems unless you follow the steps through correctly but other than that it is fairly straight forward.
