Took my Gateway desktop running XP Pro out of retirement & ran into a boot problem. Did a repair install (fixed that issue). Installed SP2 with no issues then installed SP3 with still good boot. Updated IE6.0 to 7.0 then installed all critical patches (other than IE8.0) No issues other than no sound & .Net framework was also missing. Thanks to Ben, I was finally able to install .Net Framework 3.5 & finished installing all critical updates (cannot update to optional 4)as well as Microsoft Bus Driver thru hot fix e-mailed to me from M$. Multimedia Audio Controller installed. Sounds & Audio devices still show no audio devices installed. Audio device is Realtek AC'97 (Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R1-23); repeated tries to download & install it fail, get about 99% thru & PC shuts down & reboots. Get the following error message in Event Viewer: ".NetRuntime Optimization Services reached limit of transient errors. Will shut down. Last error returned from service Manager 0x80029c4a. Event 1111". Device Manager gives me the following: Service Status: This device is not configured correctly (Code:1). Dev. MGr. shows an ! now & ethernet controller has a ? but I doubt that has anything to do with the lack of sound.

VEN NO.: PCI\VEN8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_2019107B&REV_02\3&267A616A&0&FD

I was told that rolling back to SP2 & intalling drivers there might resolve the issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Bob

Also tried new speakers (getting frustrated here). Multiple AV & AS scans show no problems. Any other ideas?

Sounds like a lot of pain to me, so try this first.

Can you remove the sound card from Device Manager (uninstall) and shut the PC down. Also make sure no related software is present in Add/Remove programs.

Then disable the device in BIOS (if built-in) or remove it from the PC (if in a slot).

Then boot up and run CCleaner reg cleaner until no more errors. Shut down PC.

Then re-enable or reinstall audio card, boot PC and try to install drivers. Try to get your driver from the Gateway web site for that exact model. Some of those Realtek audio drivers can really be a pain.

Is there a modem in this PC? Did you install its drivers before the Audio? If so, that could be the problem. On some prepackaged machines this was an issue(mostly laptops w/ built in modem).

Audio device is integrated into the tower as well as Ethernet connection. Modem is in a PCI slot but Dev. Mgr. shows no problem with modem. Will try disabling device in BIOS, etc. & let all know the results. Thanks.

Bob

Its a long shot on Desktops but I would do more than just disable. The drivers used to specifically state before installation that the UAA comes first, followed by HD Audio because it had something in the driver package for the modem and then finally the modem driver.

I would uninstall the modem driver if I was in your shoes. You already know you can find another since DM was telling you it was ok.

Audio device is Realtek AC'97 (Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R1-23)
nope... it's a SoundMax... ;)

see:

VEN8086 = Intel Vendor Number
DEV_24D5 = 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller

see if this driver is the correct one (a quick check suggests so):

if it does not work, then please say so and I will hunt one down that will... ;-)

Well it's important to get the right driver (obviously) and that's why I was saying to get it from the manufacturer's web site or at least download the driver and determine exactly what model it was for and then you can TRY a newer one.

Tried going to the website you sent but they wanted me to register & pay for the driver. Gateway’s site offered no resolution to the issue (PC too old I guess). Other sites were no help either. Dev. Mgr. still insists it’s Realtek even after disabling it & uninstalling everything related to it. Considering what some of the sites want to charge me for help, I may simply buy a new soundcard since it's cheaper than paying for a driver with no guarantee that it will work(I have 2 empty PCI slots available to me). Any other thoughts?

Thanks once more for your help, Bob

but they wanted me to register & pay for the driver.
No way!!!

SoftPedia has never ever wanted someone to pay for a download...

1. click on the link above...
2. click on download...
3. new page appears, on the right side there is a link called External Mirror 1, click that and the DL should begin...

Sorry Ben, my mistake. I hit the wrong button to get to that site to download the file. Went to the mirror page & downloaded from there. All went well but .... still no sound. Dev. Mgr. shows no problems other than no driver installed. Looks like it still wants a RealTek driver but now that only goes about 1/2 way before PC shuts down & reboots (even from Softpedia). Hate letting it get the best of me but considering turning the tower into a doorstop. Any other ideas?

Only other two options I can think of:

Manually force the driver install, risky and tricky if not experienced but sometimes works. Or buy a cheap $20 sound card if sound is the only obstacle left.

I'm leaning towards buying a new sound card as that seems quicker, easier & safer than trying to force a maual install or rolling back to SP2, trying to install the driver then & updating once more to SP3. Will let all know how that works.

Thanks to all for your ideas, Bob

Just checked a local PC parts store & I can get a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1/16 bit Sound Card for $20. Comes with an installdisk & owners manual. Reviews of that item sound (no pun intended) good. Will let all know how tyhat works.

All is well & without buying a new audio card. I feel like such an idiot. It came to me last night while lying in bed that when I purchased my PC, it came with a CD to reinstall drivers & apps., popped it in & reinstalled all missing drivers. Dev. Mgr. shows no issues, all devices running properly. Thanks for all the help anyway.
