A laptop frequently (and by itself) attempts to read from "A". without a disk in the drive, it seems to run on and on. What's the Fix?

This is usually caused by anti-virus software. Check your AV options and uncheck the A drive for scanning. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [idea]

Another method of fixing it is clearing the most recently used documents list by right-clicking on an open area of the Taskbar and choosing Properties/StartMenuPrograms and hitting the clear button.
Some systems get confused, too, when you open executables from the floppy...or try to work from it directly.
When you bring a file to the system...1st copy it to the hard drive...change Windows Explorer to seeing C drive or something else and exit.
Leaving Explorer on a look at the a drive when you close it can cause problems.

Someone who fixes computers commented on that a couple of weeks ago. Said to go to BIOS and have boot from c: only. Have never tried it but may help.
