I'm quite new to NT so I don't even know where to go in Windows NT to change a device driver for a new CDROM. Any tips?

LOL!
I just wasted several hours with the same problem (actually
I installed from the CD-ROM, but after installation NT
didn't recognize it).
It turned out that there was a special "busmaster ide" driver on the CD which came with the motherboard (ASUS P2B-DS, I think), which I had to install. Seems that NT doesn't support IDE CD-ROMs out of the box, you have to install special drivers (oh yeah, and NT thinks that IDE is some kind of SCSI controller :).

Most of my time is spent in Win 2K, BUt under 4.0 Nt will recognize native IDE devices without and effort..Simply by installing them NT will see the device but the device may not fully function. I installed on cd rom and NT called it a cd rom, but would not read from it until I installed the right driver. Assuming it's installed correctly (slave, master, etc.)Once you have it installed, from control panel you will see an applet for scsi devices. You can install the driver from there, or I believe you can also just copy the appropriate driver to the winnt/system32/drivers and reboot the computer. I would try the first option.
