Attempting to add a user to a local PC's user account

I have created a new domain and when I attempt to add a new user to a local PC's user base, I can browse the domain for all the available users but when I attempt to select one, I get the error:

Processing of object x failed with the following error:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I am able to log onto the domain, but get this annoying message when attempting to give someone more permissions on local PC's.

Any suggestions?

Have you joined the computer to the domain?

Yes, the computer is part of the local domain and the logon script runs correctly. They have all the rights to the shares from the server.

what exactly do you mean by this?

I am trying to add the domain profile to the workstation's local "power user" permission base.

So, on the workstation you run for example lusrmgr.msc, access the power users group and use the add button? this should bring you a select users box, where there should be 2 choices of location - the local machine and the domain. If you choose the domain you should be able to find the user's domain logon in the list and add it that way.

If you're running a batch file, something like

net localgroup power users \domainname\username /ADD

Yes, but when I search and find the domain user to add to the power group, select the desired account, and attempt to add the account to the local group, I get an error stating that the domain does not exist or cannot be contacted at now. If I go back and manually type the name and domain rather than browsing, it works and the account is added.

Is it possible to be related to the fact that the local domain name and the internet domain name is one in the same, and that we do not host the internet name locally?

I am planning to rebuild the local domain name structure, but I curious if there are other issues that need to be addressed during the rebuild.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I am having this problem also. It just started today. The PC is a new XP Pro, and I added some users the other day (from the domain) with no trouble, attempted to add some today and got the same error you described. The only difference I can think of is that I installed a bunch of Windows Updates to the PC today. This problem seems to be limited to the one PC. I removed it from the domain, then later rejoined. No problem joining, but then I cannot access the list of users in the domain - same error described above. I will let it sit a while, and try later.

It is ironic because my old W2k domains work fine, only with the new SP4 clean installs am I seeing this error. And it is not limited to one account. I have three right new installs that I experience this error with. I can add manually, but cannot add through the browse function.

Browsing some other posts, I found a suggestion for a similar problem that said to wait a while. The directory may be busy with some housekeeping and might become available later. I waited a half hour or so, and tried again and it worked. The server is Small Business 2003. The PC is XP Pro. Most of the posts point to DNS issues, but for me it was just a busy directory. The PC is still having some slow logins, but it's good enough for now.
