a. What sorts of attachments (i.e. are they .doc or .jpg or .zip??)
b. Describe the steps you use to "download" them from your webmail, please.
c. Describe the steps you've attempted to use to view them, with detailed explanations of error messages or where the problems arose.

The attachments are .doc , .jpg or .pps
I clicked on the attachment and was prompted to open or save the file. I chose save and saved the file on my desktop.
When I double-click on the file to open it, it displays a box that says: Windows cannot open this file.
What do you want to do?
I've tried the options, and still cannot open them.
What I've also noticed is that the filename changes to "show letter" in the save as box.

Could be a virus. Do you have antivirus software installed and is it up to date?

Right click on the file, and choose Open with...
Then, find the program you want to use, and try opening it like this.
Or, you could open the application first, then choose File - Open, browse to the downloaded file, and try opening it like that.
Let me know if it works.

I've tried your solution, but was still not able to open the file.
I decided to create another account for myself on the same pc, then logged in with the new account. I was able to download the attachment with no problems.
