We are running Exchange 2000 on a 2k server with Mail Essentials 7.0 and Nortons a/v.

The problem is that an attachment can take over 1 min to open. This happens to all users. Once the attachment has been opended, you can open it again within 2-3 seconds. It happens with all file types.

I have checked the programs (i.e. Word Excel etc) and they open files within 2-3 seconds so the problem must be somewhere in exchange.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd agree with you - the problem must be somewhere in exchange, but it might be a third party prog on your exchange server that is causing the problem, or it might be a lack of disk space.

If it was a lack of disk space, you'd probably know this by now.

It might be a 3rd party prog. I would try disabling Mail Essentials 7.0 and Nortons a/v to see if you get improvements.

Also, configure Norton NOT to scan any exchange databases or exchange executables or the M: drive. Norton AV is not exchange compliant and may cause corruption.

Thanks, Def not lack of space, although we do not restrict mailbox sizes (yet). Nortons is already configured not to scan exchange db's or M drive.

Will update as soon as i've tried to disable 3pt s/w

Were you able to resolve this issue? I am having this same problem and I can't seem to resolve it. I have disabled the 2 3rd Party s/w that I have installed and it still is slow in opening attachments. Especially, excel spreadsheets. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Please tell us a bit more about your network and your implementation of Exchange...

If there are no third party s/w to interfere, the you could check:

*problems with disk space? Check all drives on your Exchange server.
*Are you running 10base-t?
*Does the slowness happen to everyone on the network, or just a few people?
*Is it just attachments in Exchange? If the same slow attachment that is in a mailbox is copied to a drive on the exchange server, is that copy still slow to open for that user?
* How bout for another user opening the 'drive copy'?

I suspect it might be a network issue. You might have some kind of packet collision problem that is causing packets to continue to be resent. If it is happening to one user, try swapping out their network card. If the problem is happening to most all users, try swapping out the network card on the Exchange server.

Good Luck.

I have seen Exchange slow with attachments in a situation where duplex on the NIC was mismatched and mail antivirus running.

Even under normal circumstances, you may notice a delay while antivirus checks the message, but when you add to that a duplex mismatch, it will increase the problem exponentially.

I finally resloved this by reducing the number of levels that Nortons went to on version 7.51 on each individual machine.

Once I upgraded the whole system to 8.1 I no longer had the problem

Thanks guys for your suggestions

I am having the same issue with attachments opening slow. We are running McAfee groupshield which is exchange compliant. The server is even etherchanneled together for added performance. The network switch shows no errors or issues, everything is 100/full duplex statically configured.

any ideas?

I am also having this problem.

We just got finished closing our open relay, and remaking the mailroot directory. Now I know that shouldnt have anything to do with it, but its the only change we made.

Also unchecked the "allow mail to be delivered to these domains" box on our SMTP connector.

No other changes.
