Attachment trouble in Exchange 5.5.

I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on a NT 4.0 SP6 server. I am having trouble with all mailboxes opening any sort of attachments. I am also having response time issues. If you click on an email with an attachment (espically one that is in sent items) you will get a gray box popup saying please wait while client contacts the server . Today I rebooted the server and the Attachment problem went away , but I am still haveing performance issues. I have verified that when this happening the server is running at 5% cpu . I am running Computer Associates eTrust Antivirus 6.0. I have tested with and without the av services running. I see no impact one way or the other.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

how are your users connecting to the server, through lan, vpn, dialup? test your hub/switch maybe, i had this happen to a few people at my place and found it to be cabling and hubs from time to time...does the server have a fast connection, test that...

They are connecting through a lan. We are running fully 100 meg switched network.

oh, well in that case, um...how about tranferring a large file to the exchange server from the pc through a shared folder, just trying to eliminate the possibility of a poor connection...how much mem being used in task manager for server...try stopping services non essential to server...what is the server running? wins, dns, www, ftp...that kinda stuff...

How powerful is the server, How many processors, RAM, what disk subsystem?

How many mailboxes

What other services are running.

What is memory usage showing up as under task manager?

What's your pagefile settings?
