Has anyone had problems with transmission speed as it relates to using a modem with a Cisco ATA and Call Manager dialing out through a PRI. My systems engineer is saying that he doesn't recommend it because the speed will be very slow. I have been doing this with PBXs for years and never had a problem.

Any input will be appreciated.

I was told the same thing, and in practise found it to be true. If you could even get it to connect at all it was very slow. I would not recommend using ATA devices for modems at all. I used to do it through analog ports on my Definity PBX but had to install POTS lines for the modems to plug directly into when we went to CCM.

what do you want to use it for console access and things like that work fine... We use atafor consale and fax withough many problems..But all I have used is terminal

ATA is not designed for speeds over 14,400 and that depends on the model of the ATA. Truely it is designed for 9600 baud, the speed of most faxes. It is an analog adapter for FAX machines and analog phones. If you want to use dialup through your PRI, the VG series is your best choice or VIC directly attached to the router. We have 2 VG248s and I get about 48K connections on dialup. Neat platform also.

ATA=Fax machine
VG series=Modems

You can acheive 53Kbps with the ATA.. You need to make sure you have the gateway setup correctly though..

Are you using H.323 or MGCP?

You would have to provide me the details on that. Technically a FAX is a modem. According to these specs

it only supports up to 14,400 baud on an ATA 186. Even the TAC cannot find reliable ways to achieve higher speeds. So please post the right way to configure a gateway to achieve that speed. I would love to share that with my CCIEs.

I can use either H323 or MGCP. We haven't installed this one yet. I would love to hear how to set these ATAs up to achieve faster speeds. Is there a Cisco document?

Do you have any ideas on how to get speeds up to 53K on dial-up modems using ATAs?

What I know is that Cisco ATA is designed for fax machines or analog telephones, NOT for modems.
Computerhighguy is right, VG248 is the best choice for modems.
Also TAC does not support you if you have issues with modem and ata, anyway I would like to see a modem @53 kbps as told by BuckWeet.
Please let me know!

Yup, amarong is correct, it is not support by TAC, but it does work.. Of course you need to go out a digital trunk (ISDN PRI) to have it work properliy..

I'll have to get some configs (been a while since I've done it)
