At Start-up my PC thinks it has 2 monitors

Let me be clear: the only time that my PC thinks it has 2 monitors is when it starts up......once the boot gets in motion, after I log in, etc. etc. everything is normal.

I also have to say that I am assuming that it thinks it has 2 monitors -- maybe, for some reason, it is in s-t-r-e-t-c-h mode for some reason.

This is just when the MIcrosoft Windows banner appears. I have the latest drivers for my Benq FP747 LCD monitor, and I have the Intel Extreme Graphics 2. The display settings are 1024x768, 32 bit, 60MHz refresh rate. I doubt any of this matters because, again, this aberration is only when the PC is started up -- once I get into the Windows environment, all is well.

I have an IBM ThinkCentre A40p (Machine Type 8194-A4U).

How many Video Cards are there inserted in this machine, do you have more than one?

Is there any Bios Update available? Have you tried using the Bios, Safe Defaults setting?

Talking of "safe", do you see the same thing if you boot into Safe Mode?

1. Only onboard "Video CODECS" - no cards, PCI or otherwise.
2. Have already done latest FlashBIOS update.
3. THe safe mode question is not applicable...perhaps I didn't describe the sequence adequately: The distortion is when the machine starts to boot up -- it is the screen that provides the F1 (setup) and F8 (Safe Mode) options that is distorted; after that screen passes, everything is normal.

Like I said, it is not a big deal in that it doesn't hamper anything. But I have endless curiosity -- there is a reason for everything, right? -- and want to get to the bottom of this without reloading the IBM Recovery Disks or using F11 recovery. I hate to waste all that time plus adding Windows and Office XP Updates, etc. etc.

Thanks.

Hi,
Since no drivers have been loaded at that stage, the system uses a 'generic' vga driver..With your video/monitor combo, that might cause that kind of distortion..Once the specific drivers have loaded, as you noted, no problem...

If you have a Digital Camera, perhaps a screenshot of the problem might be worth a thousand words. Screenshots can be uploaded here and linked back to your Tek-Tips post.

What is the recommended display resolution for your LCD Monitor, for example my 17" LCD recommends 1280 x 1024, 1024 x 768 seems a bit small to me, here is a link to BenQ in case you can't find it in any manual?

Another thread on LCD Monitors and problems is going on here too.

Don't like/ can't read Vista's new font....revert to XP's?
