Assigned Modem IRQ changes with bootup

After getting knocked off AOL I started having trouble
with my Rockwell modem. Basically, I got it working
again by removing it with the Device Manager and shutting down the computer. When I reboot, PandP, sees the modem and reinstalls it. It assigns it IRQ 9. I am able to get on AOL fine. When I reboot the computer the next day I get an AOL message "cannot initialize your modem." Turns out it shows the IRQ as 5 which is being used by a game device. The only way I get it back to IRQ 9 is to reinstall the modem.

What makes the IRQ change from 9 to 5?

Any suggestions?

Hardware. In BIOS, it's assigned IRQ5, because 9 is a shared system IRQ.
If you want a permanent fix (assuming you do), try this:
Boot to safe mode, remove all com ports, and modems in device mangler.
Restart, go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 2.
Set "Reset configuration data" to YES.
Set "PnP OS installed" to NO.
Restart, let things install, reinstall modem.
Should all work fine now.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like that will do the trick.

I checked the help files in Win98 and discovered I could change the IRQ for the modem to 9, and it would remain if I unchecked a box labelled, "use automatic settings." At the moment things are OK. If something else occurs I will delve into the Bios.
