Hi there,

I have a pivottable connected to a cube on Analysis Manager 2000. I have set up various roles for the cube so that only certain users can view some of the data. The problem is that when I view the pivottable that is connected to this cube in a web browser it displays all the data regardless of who the user is. I have tried setting the age up so that it uses NT Authentication but this does not help. The only way I can get it to work is if I set the roles property in the connectiostring to that of a specific role, which is not ideal as I have multiple roles and can't set up the role property to point to multiple roles.

Any help would be great
Thanks

Hi plsh,

I had a similar problem with this some time back. When connecting via OWC in your browser, does your connect string use an HTTP protocol for your DATA SOURCE NAME ? (i.e., " NAME") You should be able to use any valid Windows username in the connect string regardless of cube security. And you should use MSOLAP.2 as the provider. In IIS you also need to set Website "directory security" to Integrated Windows authentication.

Hope this helps. I have a link (somewhere) to the Microsoft article that explains this and will try to find should you need more on this.

Hi gaperry,

Thanks for the help but I have tried what you suggested but still no luck. When I view the cube in the pivottable it still brings through all the data and not just what is assigned to the specific role. Have you been able to find that link you mentioned?

Hi plsh,

Here is the link that discusses connecting to Analysis services via web.

I hope this helps. Worst case, we could always do this via phone if you are really in a jam and it would help to do this one section at a time. There are several links within the link I sent you that discuss this. Good luck.

Hi gaperry,

Thank you for the link. I had a look at it and after reading the article it would appear that in order for the roles to work I have to have enterprise edition of Analysis 2K? Is this correct, as I cannot enable access from my connection string when connecting to the cube using an OWC Pivottable.

Any more help would be great.

Thanks

plsh,

Yes, you are correct on the Enterprise Edition question. I had forgotten about that since I started out with that edition of SQL server. If is more expensive but worth it. Microsoft will be adding "Reporting Services" to this edition in the next release of SQL Server. I am beta testing this now and it is quite impressive. It allows you to generate and manage reports of all types using a web based front end. Something that SQL server has always lacked.
