Hi,
At the moment, i have a NIS master running on one of the solaris 7 machine and the NIS slave is running on one of the redhat machine. I would like to switch it over to make redhat machine as a new master NIS and the solaris box as new NIS slave. How do i do that? Thanks

Very simple.
1. make a list of maps that you are using in nis e.g passwd, ether, netgroup, aliases etc...
2. copy original file from sun to linux system.
3. make a backup copy as well.
4. on linux run ypinit -m to make this sytem a master.
5. remove all map from your secondary linux server
6. run ypinit -s new_server on old secondary linux server.
7. make sure it is working. test it very good then
8 run ypinit -s new_server on sun system and it will become secondary server.

Note: Make sure you test this many time if this is master server for many systems.

hi.. thanks for your answer... on your answer.. steps 5 and 6 says

5. remove all map from your secondary linux server
6. run ypinit -s new_server on old secondary linux server.

what do you mean by secondary linux server? is it another linux machine to act as nis slave besides the new linux for NIS master and the sun box for new NIS slave (previously NIS master)? im not really understand those two steps...
