Hey everyone,

Anyone know of a solution for ASP under Linux using mySQL without using chili!soft?

Any ideas appreciated.

As far as I know there is only 3 ways to do ASP

1) PWS
2) IIS
3) Chilisoft

I have not heard at all of any ways to do it on a unix based system aside from chilisoft. Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

Thanks for that, I will have to painfully interrogate the person who said there were other solutions. :eek:)

I read that Halycon Software has an ASP application for Linux, but I never looked into that. There are better scripting languages to use with Linux.

There are a couple of solutions knocking around. None of which I would personally touch with a barge pole. Instead try converting your scripts to php with the asp2php utility from I haven't tried it personally yet, but we plan to use it when we move our servers over from NT (ugh!) to Linux (yay!). The site as a whole is quite useful for information on converting from NT based systems to Linux based.

Hi
If you are using the apache web server, you can try t load mod_perl and mod_asp from These two modules wil allow you to run ASP for unix web servers

I'm guessing these modules have much higher limitations compared to something like chilisoft's tool? Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

NNNNNOOOOOO!!!!

I have been dreading the thought of having to move from ASP to PHP.

Only because I had a feeling it might come to that one day.

I can see the advantages of using PHP but don't know enough about it to know whether it is easy for someone to move from programming ASP to PHP. Anyone?

Also, what kind of tools are there? Currently I am using Macromedia UltraDev 4 which is fantastic and makes life sooo easy.

Until I am really confident I am going to stick with ASP. It has already been tough moving from IIS/Access to Apache/mySQl (nearly complete) but I am glad I have done it. I can see the benefits down the track.

I guess the same can be said for PHP compared to ASP but I would like to hear what others think.

I will start a new thread and see if I can draw some new people into the discussion.

Hmmm...Ultradev is a handy tool, but I find it obscures what you are trying to do too much. I always hand code my asp in the code view or in notepad, because that way I know that any mistakes are my fault and not something daft that ultradev has done.

If you are tied to using ultradev to code your pages (and this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not the way I do it), you might find you have problems with php simply because, as far as I know, this kind of support isn't easily available. It doesn't bother me because, like I said, I don't work that way anyway. It might make a difference to you though.

Take a look at php. I haven't tried anything too exciting with it yet but it doesn't look all that bad. You never know, you might like it.

I have breifly looked at ultradev, yes it is rather nice, just like Borland C++ Builder is nice compared to VC++, but for the types of tasks that I do, especially backend coding, I am so much more used to the interface of VC++ and Visual Interdev, which are my prime choices.

Far as PHP goes, this is something I tried to learn but because my Hosting Provider (Windows 2000 hosting, supporting ASP) , does not provide PHP , I have never gotten around to learning this in relations to my site.

Although knowing C++/Java/Javascript does help when PHP is involved, because the structure is slightly similar to the languages I just mentioned (the higher structured type language)

I have heard that it would be faster than ASP ( I guess that completely depends on how well you set up the server, and manage your code ).

But this does seem to follow the classic develpoment delima

Easier but more limited?
Harder but more efficient?

(note the above usally depends on your task, there may be things that'll run better in the easier language, but all in all, most of the stuff for example that you do in VB, usally comes to crumble when you try to get into the stuff C++ was made for) Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

Thanks for the discussion in this thread. Hadn't been receiving the usual email notification that it was ongoing so hadn't been keeping track.

Have grabbed asp2php and Squirrelmail (PHP) and am going to have a play with it.

Meanwhile, the company has purchased Chili!Soft so we are pretty much committed in that direction.

The why not chilisoft is the price by the time it gets to Australia. Around $2000 whihc is a bit pricey for a small setup.

Will check out Halcyon, thanks. Steve Davis
