ASP.Net on a Tablet PC? 2

I am considering a new laptop, and Tablet PC prices are coming down these days...

I do most of my programming on my current laptop (Windows 2K) and I run MySQL, MS SQL Server, VS.Net and do ASP.net programming (so I use IIS (server) for development)...

I know that Windows XP Pro includes personal webserver capabilities, but does the Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005? I can't get a Tablet PC if I won't be able to do my ASP.Net development on it...

Has anyone done ASP.Net web development on a Tablet PC?

I haven't done it personally but it houldn't be a problem. You can install a free and lightweight web server and simply develop in notepad to keep the overheads dwn to a minimum. So yes, it is possible...

Dear ca8msm,

Thanks for your thoughts. Did you have a particular "free and lightweight web server" in mind? I would get a Tablet PC with enough juice to run VS.Net...

It's more an issue of whether it's possible to install web servers and database servers into the Tablet PC operating system, which seems to be different from the regular XP operating system...

I have run Visual Studio.NET on a Compaq T1000
which has a 800Mhz Processor and 500 meg RAM
and it is SLOW
I built a new Intel P4 3 gig mini case PC with SATA drive and 800FSB / 1gig ram Gigabit lan because it was so slow

Hmmm two choices spring to mind:

1) Apache
2) Use Web Matrix (comes with it's own web server)

I didn't know Apache supported the .Net framework..., I do recall Web Matrix having the built in server, and also available on

http://www.asp.net

- Cassini Sample Web Server, which I haven't ever used myself...

Still, the Tablet PC operating system...

my current laptop has recently been driving me cazy with its slowness, hence my exploration of other ideas, though the current machine does have a Pentium 4 M 1.80 GHz, with 512 MB RAM....

I read an article on using different web servers with VS and I'm sure there was a workarund that would let you use apache (although I could be wrong as it my have been the cassini one that you mentioned above). Maybe the Web Matrix is the best way to go for now then as it is small and has it's own web server (although VS 2005 also does if you have a beta copy of that).

I currently do all of my development work on a tablet (Windows Forms as ASP.net) Its a T Series Lifebook from Fujitsu. Its a little slow, but not really too bad. I did have to put 1Gb of RAM in the thing though.

If you do get one i would reccommend getting the fastest hard drive you can, i think mine is currently let down by the slow (Just over 4k RPM i think) hard drive, and should have opted for the 5600RPM one.

As for the Tablet PC OS, its pretty much the same as XP, you should defintaley upgrade to SP2 as theres a lot more functionality there and the handwriting recognition is vastly improved.
