Has anyone tried ASPs who offer Data Mining?

Thanks.

When you say ASPs you meas ASP as in Active Server Pages? AL Almeida

No, I meant the other ASP - Application Service Provider.

Thanks.

Oh that's what I thought, I kind have some concerns about that mainly on question of privicy and accessof to data, I realy don't think that would be a good ideia to keep Bussines sensitive data on App. Srv Providers, I'm just not confortble with that idea at all. AL Almeida

A vendor we have looked at that offers ASP Data Mining is
It was very hard to see the cost/benefits. The sales team was pretty arrogant - reminded me of the Broadvision types sales team during the Internet bubble.

I have seen some of these kind of vendors, and from my experienceit usualy means that they really can not fulfill their promisses AL Almeida

ASP Data Mining makes a lot of sense...I don't know how you CAN'T see the benefits of outsourcing your data warehousing and data mining with the ASP solutions. We actually just finished deploying a digiMine (mentioned below) solution, and the deployment time was astounding - 4.5 weeks. Set-up costs were very low, compared to in-house and packaged alternatives.

I was skeptical of the cocky sales team, but they delivered. Now our entire marketing department, sales dept. and executives are using the digiMine reports every day - and my department looks like heros.

Good for you!

I hope your experience keeps growing better and better everyday.

Debkaps - are you working for digimine?

ASP type solution for a Data Warehouse may make sense for smaller IT shops or E-Commerce outfits that do not have backend IT infrastructure and talent inhouse.

I have never in 10 years of Data Warehousing heard of an implementation that was conducted in 5 weeks flat. Except every 6-months or so a vendor will come to us and make such promises.

Data Mining and Data Warehousing are subjected to constant changes that a close relationship must be realised between the Corporate users and the IT.

Also the security of conducting data dumbs on a nightly basis for an ASP type solution is not practical. We do not have a e-commerce component to mine hence the model is not practical. But in e-commerce solutions, the pages are dynamic and subject to many changes - it is not possible to hardwire the changes to the tages to alert the ASP system on the requisite numbers for modelling.

What kind of data mining are you doing with digiMine?

No jeanpierre I don't work for digiMine - sorry to be a cheerleader, but I am honestly very happy with the Digimine solution. However I see your point about the benefits for web outfits...it is true that we're purly online group, but at BillG's little corp. in Redmond (that should tell you about the in house talent we have, and we still went outside). Our deployment time was amazing, mainly because the data integration was so smooth - we were alredy ready to work w/ Digimine when we signed on. I understand why your skeptical, but they really delivered our warehouse & first analytic reports in 4 wks (of course we had them there at 2am and weekends most of that 4 weeks!). I should mention that the 4 week deployment only included our web analytics, including some product/content affinity data mining reports (to see what combination people view our stories & products). The customer segmentation project took an additional 3 weeks.

As for the constant changes you mentioned, it's true that Corporate users and the IT dept. must remain close to keep on top of these. However now Digimine has picked up this day-to-day involvement and the millions of changes we make to our site each day have been answered addressed and implemented seamlessly. That service is part of our monthly fee.

Our major Digimine data mining project (someone else asked) is that we run customer segmentation reports monthly. There is talk about using Digimine's Product & Content recommendations Data Mining solution in Q2, but I don't know much about it yet.

Hope it helps...good luck.
