We are using ARCserve 6.5 for NT with a DDS3 tape drive. when we run a scheduled job it backs up about 17gb then asks for the next tape. Although we still have another 7gb left on the tape. We have set the options to overwite. Does anybody know why it is asking for the next tape?

DD3 tape drives have a native capacity of 12gb. The marketing mouths say it is 12 to 24gb with compression. Real world usage shows that 24gb per tape is exceptional. Your 17gb to tape sounds perfectly normal.

Look first to the native capacity of the tape, and then go from there. In this case since 12gb is native the 17gb to tape is just over 1.4:1 compression ratio which is not bad at all and as mentioned very normal.

We have in the past got 24gb on a tape. It is only recently that it has stopped fitting it all on.

Most probably it is due to a change in the type of data. As previously posted, gif, jpg, images in general, binaries such as exe and dll and others, sound files, all do not compress very much if at all. Compressed files will usually be larger after compression due to the overhead of the compression process.
