The joys of a mixed network have struck again, and I am in need of some advice on our current printing configuration.

We are running an AS/400 on the same network as we are running Novell 5.1 and NT 4 Server.

When we print jobs from the 400, essentially it releases it to Novell which hands it off to Microsoft which sends it to the printer. If anything is the least bit off (someone isn't logged in to novell or whatever) we can't print. We are tiring of hearing these cries for help everyday, so we'd like to get a new solution.

Essentially we would like to print directly from the 400 to the printer. Our printers use either HP JetDirect boxes or have other simliar internal configurations. (Mix of HP 5's, Lexmark Optras etc)

I believe that IP printing is our solution but each of the topics i've found doesn't seem to give me enough support when it comes to bypassing novell/windows.

In the end we'd love for it to be just like our laser printer was strapped via parrallel cable to the back of the 400.. Things used to be so simple! :)

Thanks for the advice~

Well,,, I have some bar-code printers setup om the AS400, going thru the HP direct connect boxes. They are not configured on an server. They seem to work OK. We even have a couple that are setup over our WAN. I can send you the setup instructions that have been sent to me, from TL Ashford, the label software people. Drop me and email if you want a copy. You can easily set up an HP printer with IP access (jet direct) through your as400. You do this through the output queue definition instead of the printer.
===> CRTOUTQ OUTQ(TEST) RMTSYS(HOSTIPNAME) RMTPRTQ(PASS) CNNTYPE(*IP) DESTTYPE(*OTHER) TRANSFORM(*YES) MFRTYPMDL(*HPIII) SEPPAGE(*NO)
Define the host name through TCP host where it refers to ip address.
Also you can then print bar codes, overlays, etc from the AS400 to the HP printer by changing the workstation customization object. IBM also has some nice samples at
