I'm a newbe to As400 server..
I am upgrading some Win98 PC's to W2K Pro, everything works fine except for the As400 Client access, I am using V3R2MO
Win 95/NT client access, I have downloaded and applied patch SF65353 but cannot get W2K to work with the AS400
I would be glad of any help

What version is your OS on the AS400?

Client Access (CA) V3R2 will not work under Win 2k, or rather IBM doesn't support it. They support Win 2k starting at Client Access Express (CAE) V4R4 I believe. In CAE V4Rx and V5R1 don't have the directory browsing feature that CA did. You need to set up NetServer. I don't remeber which version of the OS it started on. I do not know how to fully set it up. But you can set it up through Operations Navigator. Go to Network | Servers | TCP/IP. It should be listed in there. Then you need to set up your shares.

There is documentation on IBMs website on setting it up. If you have more questions go ahead and ask here, otherwise try the archives @ I believe that topic has been talked about several times. Mike Wills

Thanks for the pointers, Mike
I looked at the archive, but I cant decide which way I might go with this, we have some new Compaq D300 workstations running W2K Pro and they run the CA V3R2 fine except for an error that pops up in Explorer.exe
Maybe I can fix this,
Other types of PC will not run at all, my boss takes the view that we should go back to Win 98SE, "If it's not broken dont fix it"

Thanks for the help

Do you have other users that also use CA?

We had a problem where the users couldn't use CA to access the system when NetServer was running. Apparently there was a flag that needed to be flipped, but off hand I don't know where to find it.

NetServer works great for us now, and it doesn't look very hard to set up. I have looked at the configuration before. Mike Wills

I tried the same thing (using Win 2k with CA V3R2) and it would only crash, especially when I shut down the application.

Client Access Express actually turned out to be quite a lot easier to work with. I didn't set up any shares using netserver because I only need two folders to do our demographics and statements for our medical billing office. I just use the fileshares entry in CA Express and click & drag from CA to a folder in Explorer (note: will not copy directly to a floppy disk!).

The only thing I could suggest you try is to use the ACOMPAT tool (application compatibility) with Windows 2000 support tools and try to fake it into thinking it's still on Windows 98. May work, may not, but might be worth a try if you're not ready for Express. Otherwise you can do what I did and have a backup Win 98 machine set up as a backup in case something goes wrong. Luckily its connected to twinax and not connected to the Windows network! J.R. Juiliano

Hi all !!

We upgraded with a colleague of mine more than 20 PC's in Windows 2000 Pro (English) SP 2. We've then installed Client Access Minimal Install V3R2M0 Patch SF65353 (not the latest but...)because my colleague didn't have time to create the correct CAExpress installation set.
We've never experienced errors or crashes due to that CA version on none of the pc's...
Well, maybe win sp2, maybe CA patch...
But this is true that now we will install CAE on Win 2000 & XP clients...

I am sure the emulator works just fine, I think it is the other features that causes problems. Like the directory browsing through CA and operations navigator. I think it is V4R5 and above that is still the only version that is promised to work under Win2k. Mike Wills

We got the CA Express version with out V4R4[ upgrade. So far it works like a charm. Then again I only need it to browse printer queues and some file systems. I don't use it for the heavy stuff because I learned to do that on the command line. :)

I tried getting V3R2M0 to work under both that version OS/400 and V4R4 and it just didn't want to play with Windows 2000. But that's OK. I'm quite happy with this version since I don't have to depend on Twinax anymore. J.R. Juiliano

Yes... when it comes to OS400... comand line rules. When it comes to linux, GUI rules. :p Mike Wills
