If you use AS2000 with win2k and perform a sp upgrade, some times you will not be able to see you tape device after the upgrade. Usually the message is 'this is a shared device on a distributed server' and you will not be able to see your tape device under the device window.

If you see this, try modifying your registry settings as described below.

1. Ensure you have manually disabled your tape device in windows.
2. Stop tape engine
3. Go to regedt32 and select
4. \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\ARCserveIT\Base\Tapeengine
5. Select edit and add key
6. Add the following registry switch under the Tapeengine key:
Key: CONFIG
7. under this key add the following value:
Value: EnableSharedDevices
Type: DWORD
Data: 1
8. Now restart the tape engine.

This has the magic effect of making your tape device available again!

Hope this helps...Andy.

Craig,

No problem, I know how frustrating AS2000 can be, it took me 2 weeks to discover this fix.

You are about the 3rd of 4th person who has been glad they saw this info. With so many people having the same problem I am surprised CA have not made it more widely available.

They promised me they would post it on their web site, but knowing that CA tech support want to charge you just for breathing I'm not really surprised.

I posted it here so that more people could take advantage of it for free!

Glad to help...Andy.

I love you too!!! Darn, you helped me!!!!
