As much as it pained me to go there, straight from aol.about.com:
When a graphic file is saved from the Web through AOL’s browser, the default file extension is ART (*.art). This means the graphics file will be compressed using AOL's Johnson-Grace system. These files can be viewed using your AOL software but can't be opened with most other programs.
I thought I remembered that JASC's Paint Shop Pro had the option to work with .ART files, not sure what other apps may work....
