What a fun couple days I've had. On Friday the 29th someone was kind enough to take a machete to our phone lines during a break-in. Today the 31st we had a nasty power outage that lasted several hours, and it was spiking occasionally. This weekend of course being a long weekend up here.

Anyways, someone snuck a 6-port copper card in our DR5.1 8x24 system somewhere between the cut lines and the power failure, and as a result, when the power was finally restored this evening, all of our DNs changed from 2 digits to 3 (ext 28 is now ext 228, etc) The downside is that our Startalk Flash 1.9 is still set for 2-digit DNs.

Now... I know that the upgrade to 3-digits was the result of the initialization of the 6-port copper card (gonna smack whomever shoved it in while powered) My first question concerns the possibility of returning to 2-digits. AFAIK, removing the 6-port copper card will cause the 8x24 KSU to default itself. At this point that would be bad, as I am still waiting for the delivery of my FastRAD (which btw, instructions for making a backup would be appreciated) So, at this point, it would appear that I am stuck with 3-digit DNs, which I can live with.

However, Voicemail becomes an issue. Since the Startalk Flash is still set for 2-digit DNs, the DN associations don't match. Calls can still be transferred directly using F986, but voicemail after 4 rings is gone... AFAIK, the only way to change the Startalk Flash to 3-digit DNs is to default it... again something drastic which I do not look forward to. I'm also aware that I may have "issues" trying to default a 2-digit Startalk on a 3-digit system... Might it be possible to reset the Startalk Flash config via the serial port (I already use the console for mailbox admin tasks) About the only positive thing going for me is all incoming calls are still going to General Delivery (phew!)

As a sidenote, In the event that I do end up defaulting my 8x24, does anyone have a table showing the differences between various setup templates, i.e. Square, Hybrid, etc.

I appreciate any input that helps me out! I wouldn't even be surprised if I overlooked something simple, as I've been working on this stuff for about 20 hours in the last few days, on a holiday weekend no less.

TIA

You can reset the Flash as follows:

1 - Login to F983
2 - At the first admin screen dial 1
3 - At the password prompt dial REINSTALL
4 - Confirm that you wish to reset the database
5 - Give the Flash about 5 minutes to reset, then dial F983 and reconfigure.

You can check our website for Reference guides on many Norstar products.

I don't imagine it's possible to change back to 2-digit DNs, while leaving the 6-port copper card in place, and not have to reprogram from scratch?

No. With the 6-port expansion there are too many possible stations. The system won't let you change to 2-digit DN's. Either the phone system or the voicemail will need to be reprogrammed. That is unless you have a backup of your original 824 programming. Then you could pull the 6-port and restore the database.

Thanks for all your help Brian... I managed to convince the boss that 3-digit DNs were the way to go. Reset the Startalk Flash tonight, went smoothly.

As a bonus, I think a VM reset was long overdue. We were getting occasional audio glitches and so forth. I figure the solid state storage can get corrupted/crosslinked/fragmented like any other filesystem. Plus I got to clean out all the old junk (some people never erase their voicemails, and they wonder why nobody can leave them messages) Just lots of clutter left over from before me.

And of course, this is a lesson regarding UPSes. We actually had a couple, one fried and the other had a battery leaking acid. I had asked for some new units, I may just get them now. I think an APC Smart-UPS 2200 would suffice. Should get a couple hours runtiime assuming a 200W load.
