Arghhhhhh! XP Pro System Restore Problems

I performed a system restore on an XP Professional computer that crashed and everything went through it seemed okay. About a day later numerous programs started to hang and become non-responsive. I'm at the point now where I would just rather install Linux! No but seriously I've reinstalled service pack 1 after doing the system restore and that fixed my networking issues temporarily but now everything just freezes. I really hate dealing with the problems I've had with Windows XP Pro, I would rather deal with Windows 98 or NT Issues, because the Xp problems don't seem to have answers, you just have to redo from scratch. What should I do? This is a client site, they need to be up an running consistently with minimal problems, I have to drive 20 miles just to get to them on these issues.

Yeah Right, tell me about it. Issues like these make me wonder what the heck Microsoft is thinking when they come up with these Operating Systems, I guess that's why you need a million MCSE's to help handle all the garbage Microsoft throws at us.
I don't mean to Microsoft Bash but something has got to give.!

Maybe we are looking at this from the wrong angle-

It might be a faulty install due to a hardware problem, more than likely bad RAM. Check out your RAM and check out your CPU temp. Let me kow what you find.

Had this problem with a poor PSU (and a low watt psu on another machine). Have you updated any hardware lately? or installed additional hardware (another hard drive or more powerful graphics card).

Not a complete lover of system restore. In a commercial enviroment, I would always perform a fresh install (even this I would suggest is a fresh install and not an image) But these are personal preferenses. Need to watch out as a couple of times I have used system restore and missed the lightningly fast warning that this has failed
