Running ArcServe 6.61 on NT 4, SP6 Exchange Server. Job runs fine then hits the ArcServe\Temp directory, then hangs forever. This has been happening for a few days or so. Does this folder have to be backed up? Obviously it holds the .cat files which are for the catalogs.

Anyone?

Hi
If there are files under temp folder this mean you have a problem with Arcserve database,This folder normally get filled with CAT files during the backup and at the end of the backup those CAT files it should update your arcserve database and if it not get cleared at the end of backup this is indicate you may have sort if database corruption

1-run dbcheck & dbfix based of these links

2-run the command mergecat.exe to update your Arcserve database and this is should empty the temp folder if not
copy them to another folder.

3-run a backup job and see if still keep fome files after the backup finished and it update arcserve database.

Note:You can execlude TEMP folder from your backup since it is a temp folder and there is no use of backing it.

A little background information might help.

During a backup the database info is written to a xxx.tmp file. At the end of that session the .tmp is changed to .cat and written to tape as the last file in that session. At the end of a backup mergecat.exe is spawned and it will merge into the database all the *.cat files regardless of which job they are from.

So normally when there are no jobs running there should be nothing in the temp directory.

Remaining *.tmp files are an indication of a problem with a backup that resulted in the tmp file not being processed. Any remaining tmp files should be deleted.

If there are remaining *.cat files then run mergecat.exe and see if it merges in all the files. If it stops on a file it might be corrupt so try moving that file out and then run mergecat again.

Here are the mergecat.exe parameters:
Usage : MERGECAT.EXE /F:00000000.CAT /D:[0/1]
/F:CATALOG.CAT - Default is to merge all catalogs
/D:1 - Default is to delete catalog file after merging it

No need to use any parammaters since running only mergecat by defult will merge all cat files.

I got the same problem using Arcserve 2000 SP2 in NT Server 4.0 SP6a. It hangs while copying the cat files under arcserve\temp. It happens at the beginning around 10% of the job then stays there until you stop or kill the job.
I did all the dbfix and end up reinitializing the database and still get the same error. Any other ideas.

Thanks,

If you have initilized the database then you should delete the CAT files under /temp folder since no use to keep the them.

if you want to update your database with the CAT fiels then you need to issue the command mergecat.exe to merge the cat files to arcserve database ,at any time when there is no backup is running the fodler /temp should be empty if there is any files there this mean you have a datbase corruption and you need to get rid of it by running the database maintenaince tools which can be found in CA support site.

I am also encountering the same problem. I have 1 job that hangs up on the temp file every time. It is one server that is causing this problem. If I remove that one server from the job it works fine. If try to backup that server individualy it hangs on the temp file. If i try backing that server up volume by volume it hangs up randomly. I have arcserve 11 running on a windows 2000 server. The server that is hanging up is also a windows 2000 server. I have tried repairing the database and that did not fix the problem. I then replaced the database with a new database and it still did not fix the problem. I've ran all of arcserves patches even updated my the drivers for my scsi controller, nothing seems to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
