:-( Need help with this. We are using a NetWare 3 and our backup tapes don't work anymore. Please give us suggestion to how to get the backup tapes going again. Thanks
What version of Arcserve including patch level?
What type of tape drive and tapes?
Any error messages?
What patch level on NW3? -----------------------------------------------------

Sorry about not giving more info.. Here's what I know from your questions: The ARCSERVE version is 4 and I don't know what the path is. As you can tell, I don't know anything about ARCSERVE. Sorry! The tape drive is a SCSI and there are no errors that I see. I don't know what the patch level is for NW 3. We don't have a Novell "expert" here at work. We learn as we go.
In the directory where Arcserve is installed on your server, chcek the ARCH$SVR.LOG and TAPE$SVR.LOG files. Look for any errors, they usually begin with E and are four digits in length.
Also, try formatting/quick erasing the tape every day. Failing that, go to
and see what you can find, otherwise post back. -----------------------------------------------------

"The Lad" has a good point. When you format a tape in ArcServe (at least the newer versions), you will be prompted to enter an expiration date. If you keep trying to run backup tapes on an expired tape, you will have problems. Trying to re-format the tapes is a good idea. You may/may not be able to do this from the ArcServe client manager on a workstation. You may have to go to the server and format the tapes from their using the ArcServe utilities. When you re-format the tapes, set a new expiration date. Good luck!
