Hi All,

Has anyone ever had a problem with Arcserve hanging on Groupwise directiries? Arcserve 7 is running on a Netware 5.1 Server.

What happens is this: The backup job will stop and sit on one directory, and we think that it is somehow creating thousands of files within that directory. We had one directory with 1.8 million files in it last week.
The only way to get rid of the directory was to delete it without going into it and restore from tape.

I'm not sure if it did this to several directories and we are just finding about those now, or if it is continuing it's wacky behavior.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

This happens when you don't have GW Backup Agent for Arcserve runing on the Netware 5 server you are backing up. This is a must. We had the same thing happen. Also, in your options for Arcserve, you must choose Use Lock Mode if Deny Write Fails.

We also had this problem, and do not use any GW agents or open file agents. We set the backup job to deny none and set the push agent option to none. This worked for a few weeks, until the problem started happening again. We found some of our directories had more than 18,000 files, so we decided to break the backup job into smaller ones. Instead of backing up the parent folder, we created different backup jobs for each subfolder. We have had no problems since. Hope it helps.
