Hi,

I'm running Arcserve 2k with latest SP installed on a Win2k Server with latest SP installed. i am using a Dell DLT tape loader with 1 drive and 7 slots.

Let me start by saying everything has been working fine for a month since I reinstalled Arcserve after a Server migration and I am completely untrained in the ways of Arcserve, and I am sorry for such a simplistic question, so this one should be pretty easy for all you amazingly talented people out there.

I'm getting a license error with "E12002 <3WCA>- Windows NT Client Agent - License Error Terminating ....... Blah blah blah"

That part I understand and can fix with a 5 hour phone call to an incomprehensible indian lady wanting all my personal and business history before saying "I'll ask a licensing rep to call you back".....*click*

Grrrrrr.

My question is why can't I mount my tapes? Everytime I try , things seem to get FUBAR'd really quick. In short, the job 'hangs' and the tape Robot has a fit until I stop the service after 24 hours.
Isn't the tape library option a completely different license in Arcserve 2k?
So why is the Win NT CA license error affecting it?

Around the same time i installed the Blaster Worm patch. Could the patch have affected a Dll that arcserve requires?

I'm Annoyed, but would be greatful for a response as knowing what affects Arcserves' operation aids my understanding in trouble shooting future Arcserve problems.

Cheers

For the error with 3WCA, there was a patch that was included with SP3 for ARCserve to correct that error. However. On a system that has ARCserve 2000 you shouldn't have the NT Agent installed.
As for the hanging while the mounts are happening I would suggest following the following Tech Doc
ARCserve uses its own drivers for the device and we only require the driver to be loaded on the OS for Changers/Autoloaders.
In Device Manager go into Tape Drives and disable the DLT unit

Have you run regit and entered the license key that comes with the box. Suggest applying the patch that xenotec mentioned otherwise the thing will drive u potty. If you don't properly license the product the thing don't work. The TLO is a separate license, as is every other bit of there software.. You wanna goto the drive on the arcs**** management server and look for the folder ca_lic under which there should be a file .olf if u open this up in notepad.. you'll soon find out what is, and what isn't licenced. If your server has multiple nics... as in more than one speak to CA licensing dept where they do speak in an english accent, and they should be able to provide u with a code that means that can be applied to all servers.

I do get what u mean though about the support line, try saying echo a couple of times into the conversation and time, how long it takes before you hear it.. I had one which lasted 30 seconds.

Stat1c,
What you are saying is totally out of the main subject,it is not related to the license error client getting.

3WCA is for ARCserve 2000 Workgroup/Advanced Edition Client Agent for Windows NT/2000
and the license comes from the Arcserve server, there is no seprate license for it.

I am agree with xenotec there a patch in CA support site to fix this but I don't know it is included in sp3 or sp4 since it is still
there is CA support site.
the patch is

Mohamdr.. I wasn't talking about the client i was talking about the tlo!

Hi Chaps and Chapettes,

Thanks for all your great advice and I have kind of found a solution.

After watching 'Finding Nemo' and eating dinner I submitted and opted to reinstall Arcserve. But this is before what else I had tried first, including trying all the great advice given.

To solve the <3WCA> Error - Removed the NT Client. Thanks Xenotec. Shame on me, now that I think about it.

As for the tapes won't mount problem. After verifying and trying Xenotec, mohamdr andn Stat1c's advice I had the following results.

I called CA TLC and a very nice Aussie lady very plesantly worked through a possible licensing issue with NT Client and the Tape Library option. In the end no need to worry about the NT Client as I had removed it and the Tape Library checked out fine. So she very kindly put me through to CA technical support at no charge.

Technical Support was pretty good and we found and corrected the following.
I only had Arcserve SP3 installed and was unaware of SP4, so my cry for help was misleading when I said I had the latest service pack. Firstly, we identified that it is best to install windows drivers for tape drive properly, so I eventually found the correct drivers for the tape device, a dell 120 DLT1 autoloader. Also installed SP4 with recommended Tape Library patch (QO41394.CAZ)from CA technical support. I re-scanned for H/W changes and stuff, and restarted the server a few times which isn't on a cluster ,resulting un-idealy, in unimpressed users, and found my tape engine service had disappeared.

Bugga.

By this time CA technical had hung up.

Event Viewer ID was 11923 and Arcserve Error ID was 1923. In short, an Msiinstaller error complaining that I didn't have enough privilages to install it. Only time this could have happened was when I installed SP4 and the patch. Strange as I'm not running a AD yet so Domain Admin should have been more than enough.
I Tried everything under the sun ie <net start tapeeng> or running tapeeng from command prompt and re running device manager and stopping and starting related services, re scanning for H/W changes, re-installing SP4 and patch and more server restarts but this time at night.

So in the end I gave up, reinstalled Arcserve with Tape Library option but am hesitant to install SP4 and definately no patches.

Back up is working fine now but I will redo licensing tommorrow.

Arserve 2k sits locally on the F&P server it is backing up so is there any reason i need to really install latest SP's and patches? I'm a great beliver in keeping it simple and not fixing things which aren't broken.

Again any opinions on this matter would be appreciated.

In the mean time I'm off home to pack to go snowboarding.

Cheers

Flypuck, put sp4 on.. I only patch if i get a problem, luckily i've got a permanent test bed to try them on first. Break a Leg..
