I've been consistently getting the following error when backing up the individual mailboxes in exchange 5.5 sp4

ArcServe Error 8602 Failed to read from database (DBNAME=Individual Mailboxes\..., EC=Backup Agent Error -- (359)"Failed to read data block for attachment.")

This error doesn't seem to happen on the same mailboxes but, rather, will move from one to the other. To make this even more confusing. I can stop the backup and do a custom backup of the folder that caused the problem (no changes made to the folder by the owner) and the backup will be successful. This is driving me nuts because the backup locks up when this happens.

Any Ideas?

I'm having the same issue, and there seems to be no answer or workaround I can find. Good luck. If I find anything out, I'll post it.

Guys,
Can you both try disabling your exchange anti-virus before backing up the brick level. I want to see if this makes a difference. Also, try the exchange utilities isinteg, esutil, and edbutil.

Im having the same problem, ArcServe support suggested (which I am doing right now) uninstalling the agent and reinstalling it.
I am taking it one step further and reinstalling the complete software. We did a upgrade from 6.61 adv edition and have had nothing but problems.

Hi there,

I called symantec on this issue and they have a zip file you can download, its basically 2 batch files that stop the mapi/vapi mode to mapi mode and back to mapi/vapi mode.

I am applying this right now to our backups as I have been having the same problems.

Hey Jeff, the upgrade is a bit of a shocker. Things don't get changed in certain places, registry settings aren't correct, enrionmental variables are odd. This is why your having problems.... The most common one is usually the problem with writing to the database and the backup hanging at 99%

I've had to do a lot of trial-and-error research on this one myself. It seems to be A/V software related, though. We're using InnoculateIT A/V set with full scans nightly. Since I've changed the scan schedule to Sunday only, the hangup seems to happen a LOT less now. If anyone's using InnoculateIT along with ArcServe and Exchange, that may help.

I believe that I am having the same problem as the group of you. My error only occurs on one mailbox in particular. We have asked him to close it at the end of each night and we are sure that he has been. I must admit that I am the new technician at this company and the man that was here before me seems to have left the place in a huge mess. Also my error message reads like individual mailboxes\persons name\calendar.

My question to you is do you think that the batch files will fix my problem if it is only occuring at one mailbox?

Thanks for you time

We used to have this issue and I'm not sure how it/I fixed it. The things that were tried: 1) Like was said previously chek NAV and apply the patch, and/or don't use MAPI/VAPI modi.

2) Make sure circular logging is turned off on the Exchange server.

3) or my personal fav, that 'appears' to have worked (Users love this one). Close all connections to the Exchange Server for a few hours and let the backups run. This occured on accident while we were doing some other upgrades, but the BLBU seem to be working ever since...go figure.

395 E8604 Failed to start backup. CDNAME = dbaexchis, EC= Backup Agent Error - (331)" Insufficient privelege. Please check user privelege",)

393 E8602 Failed to read from database (DBNAME = Individual Mailboxes\Administrator\Inbox, EC = EXCH Exchange Agent - (418) "Application run out of memory",)

These are the two erros I'm getting I have applied the new patch. I'm lost.

Add me to the bunch. I am getting the same EC=359 error. I have tried disabling the virus scanners. No luck. I ran the eseutil in /d and /g mode. No luck. I ran the isinteg.exe utility on the public and private stores until I received 0 errors and 0 warnings. No luck. I am running out of options and CA doesn't seem to have any other ideas, either. I will keep everyone updated on my progress.

I've verified that, for my site, it is InoculateIT real-time a/v scanning that is causing the problem. The error has not happened ONCE since I've turned it off. Unfortunatley, that has the side-effect of leaving the system open to viruses!

Does anyone know of a way to turn off/on the real-time a/v service in batch mode?

use pre-post option in arcserve to stop and start the antivirus services..
thanks Happiness is a daily decision
