Win2k Server Crashed and am trying to restore:

As of now, have formatted and reinstalled W2K server(sp3) & Arcserve 2000 (sp5)

Restore system state Activity Log:

Restoring Files: Sysvol c:\winnt\sysvol\domain
W3423 Unable to open the registry key KEY=SAM EC=ACCESS DENIED
W3423 Unable to open the registry key KEY=SECURITY EC=ACCESS DENIED
Restoring files COM+ Database
(The job goes to HOLD, with a last result of "crashed"

See old thread478-161297 as this essentially same result. Permission/Security isn't an issue...This is a new W2K and Arcserve 2k Install running under Administrator. Also running restore under Directory Services Restore Mode (per Arcserve tech).

If Server is rebooted as it stands, I get a missing or corrupted ntoskrnl.exe error. Only option is another scratch install- Win2k setup repair options have not worked.

Anyone seen this before? Any ideas?

Thanks-

did you copy over the boot.ini file in the restore....if you did this will cause the system not to boot

Apologies for dragging this one back up. Anyway, I've come across this problem before, and applying that Microsoft patch has indeed solved the problem. However, I've come to do it again, and the patch does not solve it this time.

Does anyone actually know WHY that patch needs to be applied? What's changed within Arcserve or Windows which requires it for a System State restore? CA don't even mention the error message in their knowledge base, so obviously it's not a common problem reported to them.

I've logged a call with CA to see if they can actually fix it, but I assume their answer will be "Upgrade to the latest version" which sadly at the moment isn't an option. This is a live disaster recovery situation.

akeener, if you're still around, and can help with this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have just experienced the same problem. Everything looked good until the restore of system state which crashed at 99%. I looked at this article and could see the Microsoft patch. I applied this but this did not work. I thought looking at your original post over 1 yr ago you had SP3 installed. I reinstalled with SP2 and no updates and then restored. It worked!!! Originally I was Win2k (SP4 with all updates).

Hope this helps!!
