HELP! We are running Exchange 5.5 on NT4 SP6 and using ARCserve to backup. We can never get a full backup unless we stop services on Exchange. Very time-consuming! Errors similar to monkeylizard in other thread:

W4304 Unable to open file.(FILE=E:\exchsrvr\mtadata\db000050.dat) EC=SHARING VIOLATION.

W3961 The file cannot be found. (FILE=C:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\edb01605.log)

I figure the log file has been replaced by another? Will the "Use lock mode if deny write fails" work for the first one? And what exactly does that mean... does it actually back up the evasive file? Thanks so much for any help.

timmi,

Are you running the Arcserve Backup Agent for exchange? And if so what version of Arcserve and what sp as well as what version of the Exchange Agent are you running?

epohl,
We are running Arcserve 6.5 for Windows NT. We have Microsoft Exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4. I'm not sure what you mean by Exchange Agent.

timmi,

Exchange Agent is an addon for Arcserve that when installed on a exchange 5.5 server allows you to backup exchange files that are in use. In order for this to work properly I believe Arcserve 6.5 must be at least build 620 and the Exchange agent needs to be version 2.0.

Hey thanks... where can I get this addon? I'll check the build... I saw the number but didn't write it down.

The addon could be hard to get at the moment as CA wont well it to you. You may have to consider going to a reseller who might have or maybe a friend with the CD and a similar version, but you'll still have to license it.

I found this information at:

UPGRADE for Backup agent for Exchange Server version 2.0 NT build 57. Required for ARCserve 6.5 NT. Requires Keycode.

That description sounds like you already have to have the Backup Agent and it's an Upgrade, yet the Instructions ( sound like it is the add on for ARCserve 6.5 with no previous Exchange Backup Agent required.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Any risk in trying it? (stupid question!)

Nah, no real risk, it either backs up or it doesn't. You'll find it on the same CD which has ARCserve, but as I said you'll need to license it.
