I have a problem using Arcserve 9.01 on Netware 6.5 sp3.
The problem is that although i have a Sony SDX-500v AIT2 drive using AIT2 tapes in Arcserve it picks it up as an AIT1 tape meaning i cant get my 130gb capacity.
In addition to the above, i have removed the drive from my Netware 6.5 server and put in my Windows XP Pro SP2 PC, it detects it and recognises the tape as being AIT2.
Therefore this is definitely an Arcserve v9.01 issue.
130Gb capacity on an AIT2 is compressed capacity NOT native if you're getting more than 50Gb on an AIT2 cart then hardware compression is working. Sony uses an insane and IMO unrealistic 2.61:1 compression ratio when quoting capacity (most other manufacturers use a 2:1 ratio which can still be hard to achieve), which realistically you have little if any chance of getting close to.
Although the following document relates to ARCserve for Windows it gives a good insight into compression:
Just because it is stating media type as AIT in ARCserve, doesn't necessarily mean it isn't detecting it as AIT2.
You should also look at getting patched up to the latest level (9.01 doesn't really indicate what post 9.01 patches (if any) you've applied) which may help or not depending on whether there is really an issue in the first place, or whether it is something purely cosmetic:
I have identified that the backup stops when it reaches 50gb or just under, it then asks for another tape. I have patched Arcserve as far as i can with relation to CA's support site.
I have posted a query with their support team but have heard nothing yet but was hoping someone may have had a similar problem at some time.
According to the CA website they support the SDX-500v completely with Arcserve 9.01 as they do many other models of tape drive. So i dont understand why this problem is occurring.
Incidently, before i patched Arcserve, it was showing the media as being AIT2, sadly Arcserve doesnt work properly without crashing when it isnt patched.
That's a tough one to call - are the volumes you are backing up compressed ? If so this might explain it, backing up a compressed NetWare volume means you will get zero compression by the drive as the files are already compressed.
Pauzotah,
We have AIT-1, AIT-2, and AIT-3 media in our various libraries. They are all reporting as Density Code = AIT1 (Arcserve 11.1). However, by looking at the logs I know we are getting the correct amount of data per tape.
We have not yet gotten to NetWare 6.5, but I would imagine if you have rights to do so, you could check in iManager or ConsoleOne to see if your volumes are compressed. I believe that NetWare by default does compression.
When backing up our volumes we calculate the number of tapes required by assuming all of our data has been compressed (see vschumpy's post). For an AIT-2, that would be 50GB per tape.
