Netware v5.1 fully patched running Arcserve v7.

I am having problems when trying to perform a restore. ArcServe displays the sessions on tapes correctly but then will not drill down and display any further info (tried restore from manager and restore wizard - same problem). I have looked at other threads regarding this and followed apparent fixes but still no joy. Steps taken as follows:

Applied patches from CA technical document QO2473 which reuires the follwing applied QO20942 - QO05996 - 0O12831 - Q016426 - QO12831 which I have done.

Edited host file on local PC and Arcserve.
Amended BTI.CFG file as suggested in earlier threads.
Disabled virus software on local PC where ArcServe manager runs from.

There also seems to be a bit of debate on cache size entry in BTI.CFG file. According to CA technical document no. 19108 it should be set to 20% of DB size or server memory which ever is lower. Is this accurate??

I have installed ArcServe Manager on a WINNT4 and WIN2000 PC respectively to check performance and the problem is consistant - still will not expand sessions.

Thanks in advance fro any help.

Welcome to the club... I am having the same problem and like you have applied patches and suggested config changes.

I found the following note on the CA website. When I called the number a real person answered on the 2nd ring.
This was not the normal tech support hot line.

Note: If you have problems or questions that do not apply to any of the above-mentioned areas, or if you feel the need to escalate your concerns outside of normal channels, call the Corporate Help Desk located in the U.S. headquarters at (631)-342-4100.

They seemed interested in helping to resolve these issues, and said they would escalate this to upper management. Although, I haven't heard back from them yet, maybe if they heard from more of us they might wake somebody up who can actually cause them to pay attention to what is going on.

Then again, this might just be wishful thinking on my part.

Good luck!! :)

Are you running InoculateIT? If so deactivate it and try your drill down again. I had the same problem. I stopped scanning the Arcserve database directory with InoculateIT and now it works. I had to find this out on my own. CA was no help!! Good luck! Susan Hebel, MASE, CNE

Thanks for the replys!!

Susantci - can you advise me how to check for InoculateIT and disable?? Have checked in ArcServe manager and at server console but could not see it running. Is there nlm that should be loaded or is it part of Arcserve??

Thanks in advance.

InoculateIT should have a separate console screen running on you server. Do an Crtl-Esc at the console prompt and see if there is a listing for the InoculateIt console. Also try doing typing "m inoc*" at the console prompt. Susan Hebel, MASE, CNE

Not sure if you are trying to do a full restore. I needed to do a full restore on my server from the tape and was having the drill down problem as well. (This was my 4th try at it.)

This is what I did to make it work for me.

1. Installed Netware and Service Packs
2. Installed Arcserve 7 and Service Packs.
3. Started Arcserve on the Server
4. Did a restore from the server schedule of the directory services.
5. Down the server, reinstall the arcserve on the server and patches.
6. Went into the arcserve program and merged the database.
7. Drill downs were then availble ( I needed to restore 2 full volumes and a selective restore on the sys volume).

I think this silly way to have to do this it did work for me. I have worked with Arcserve since version 4 and this is by far the worst version in my opinion. I am not sure if this will do the same for you but it might offer a different view point on the problem.

Thanks for all the replies folks & susantci. I am fairly confident that Inoculate is not running on server. I am now having 2 chains of thought that I would like to run by you all.

Firstly one thought is that the sessions that I cannot expand in ArcServe Manager are all at least 10Gig+ (still to investigate further) so maybe it something to do with the amount of data per session......any thoughts?? (or file paths are too long and arcserve manager cannot handle them)

Secondly I am still mythed about btrieve. In older versions of btrieve you could run a monitor at the server console (BTRMON.NLM) which would display database engine resource usage (see CA tech document 10135) but in btrieve v7 it does not install the nlm by default. Tried to use the BTRMON.NLM from Netware 5.1cd but server but it did not like that!! Does any one have experience of using Btrieve v7?? (apart from changing BTI.CFG file)

Thanks again in advance.....

There is a limit on the number of files that can be open in a session. I learned this from Arcserve support. That number is 10,000. I never saw this written any where.

I have a version of btrmon.nlm from the upgrade that I did. That worked on my server without a problem. This is how I figured out my InoculateIT problem. My version is 6.15 from 1995 and it works. Susan Hebel, MASE, CNE

Ok ok, in my long journey to figure out Btrieve I looked at From their own forums there is a post (look at I am running Netware 5.1. with traditional Novell volumes which will only support upto 2Gb - Eureka!! My current arcserve database is about 3Gb. So I am going to put a fresh install on Arcerve on a NW5.1 server and run the Db up to 2Gb and monitor performance.

I will let you all know the result.

Sounds like a plan!! Good work LoYBoY!
Please post if this works. I have a couple sites with the 5.1 and Arcserve. I have not checked them in a while. It may be time to.

Ok - I will put a post up but it might be a few days to a week until I get round to testing. If you (susantci) find out any other info from your digging please post.

I would be very interested to see what else is out there!

Thanks.

Hi, all

I have the same problem on the ArcServe 6.6 on a Netware 5.1 server. I can't drill down into the database but was able to restore the full session.

But I don't think it was caused by the database's size. Becasue my Arcserve database is even not bigger than 1GB.

Sometimes after run a merge job on the tape, the problem will gone. But not always.
