ArcServe 7 patched.

I get this error "E6959 Unknown HACB error" in the tapeserver log, part way through a backup session. The first few volumes backup fine, then the error starts occuring. CA says this is not their problem, it's Novell's, coming from the NWPA.nlm.

After a server re-boot, backus are fine, until the next GFS starts, Monday night. This repeats most, but not every Monday night.

Has anyone else experienced this.

Thanks

Have you got a tape drive attached to a Compaq Array controller or similar. This is not supported and drives/changers should be on it's own controller

Check to see if you have NWASPI.CDM loading? Usually in the Startup.ncf file. REM this out and rename the drive to stop it loading completely.
Other *.CDM drivers that may be loaded are SCSI2TP.CDM, NWTAPE.CDM

If you are running a changer/Library delete .CTP & .chg files from the ARCserve directory and reboot after all the above have been run through

Thanks for the posts...

Single AIT-50 Tape drive is on it's own controller, it's been running fine for over a year, until this error started happening. I think the problem might be comming from cpqshd (nwpa driver?), or the drive itself. It only stops responding on a GFS day and after it's backed up several volumes (Monday night). After a re-boot the rest of the week goes flawless.

No nwaspi loading.

startup.ncf
LOAD NWTAPE.CDM (ver 1.03a)
LOAD CPQSHD.CDM (ver 1.50j)
LOAD IDECD.CDM
LOAD SCSIHD.CDM
LOAD CPQFC.HAM SLOT=4
LOAD IDEATA.HAM PORT=1F0 INT=E
LOAD CPQRAID.HAM SLOT=6
LOAD CPQSCSI.HAM SLOT=10010
LOAD CPQSCSI.HAM SLOT=10011

...I've talked to CA about this, their answer is to buy more software from them...I'm think instead I'll look at Vertitas...any thoughts along that line?

Thanks

From the Startup.ncf you are loading NWTAPE.CDM! This should not be loaded as ARCserve uses it's own device drivers and this can potentially cause the conflict. REM this line out and rename the driver just to ensure that it doesn't load.
Also, Please check the CONFIG.SYS and Autoexec.bat file to ensure that you aren't loading scsi drivers for the CDROM and so forth. As a best practice you should have these files as a menu system.
EG of config.sys lines that should be REMOVED
rem device=C:\fws2aspi.sys /cdboot
rem device=C:\fws2cd.sys
rem device=C:\cpqidecd.sys /D:CPQCDROM

Thanks for the reply.

No NWtape...interesting, I'll check that out.

Nothing but files in the config.sys

Nothing in autoexec but the server.exe, etc, no CD-rom stuff.

As a side note, the darn tape eject button on the drive has failed...if the drive is bad (marginal and failing), that would explain a lot.

NWtape.cdm removed, system restarted, one backup completed without failure.

...we'll see if the process goes better on Monday night (GFS)

Thanks XENOTEC
